Believe me, I was baffled the first time I heard about link juice!”😉

In business, there’s always something new to learn, and who would’ve thought we’d be discussing “juice” in SEO?

I started SEO back in the day when it seemed like a foreign language (that’s what my banker thought, long story!).

The truth is, I didn’t understand it back then, and I still achieved first-page rankings for clients.

Unfortunately, today’s SEO landscape is different. Spammers and cheaters force Google to adapt, meaning we must keep learning.

But it doesn’t have to be hard!

Read on as we break down link equity in plain English and show you how to squeeze SEO “juice” out of your content to outrank your competition.

Let’s get to SEO juicing!

The Secret Sauce of SEO: Demystifying Link Equity

Hey there, fellow digital marketers and small business owners! Ever feel like you’re running in the wrong direction, wondering why your amazing website isn’t getting the love it deserves from Google?

Trust me, I’ve been there.

After years of helping businesses navigate the choppy waters of SEO, I’ve learned that one of the most overlooked ingredients that can make or break your online visibility; is SEO link equity.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Link equity? Sounds like some boring financial term!” But stick with me here, because understanding this concept could be the hand-up your website needs.

What is Link Equity? 🤔

Imagine you’re at a huge party (remember those?), and you’re trying to get noticed. Suddenly, the most popular person in the room points at you and says,

“Hey, that person’s awesome!” Instantly, everyone’s eyes are on you.

That’s what link equity does for your website in the eyes of search engines. In SEO language, link equity (also called “link juice” – yeah, we get creative with our terms) is the SEO mojo that one webpage passes to another through hyperlinks.

It’s like a vote of confidence from one site to another, telling Google, “Hey, this content is legit!”

Digital Marketing Expert and Founder of Neil Patel Digital:
“Link equity, often referred to as ‘link juice,’ is crucial because it decides how search engines view the importance of your pages. Google judges your site by the number of quality links you have pointing to your site.  Link quality gives  you authority and credibility in the eyes of Google.”

Why Should You Care?

Here’s the deal: Google won’t take your word that your site is all that and a bag of chips. It needs other reputable sites to vouch for you. The more high-quality sites link to you, the more Google thinks, “Hmm, this site must be pretty important!”

Don’t just take my word for it. A study by Backlinko found that the top-ranking page on Google has an average of 3.8 times more backlinks than positions 2-10. That’s huge!

The Nuts and Bolts: How Link Equity Works

Alright, let’s get a bit technical (but I promise to keep it painless):

  1. Page Authority and Domain Authority: Think of them as your website’s report card. Scored from 1 to 100, they tell you how likely your site is to rank in search results. The higher, the better!
  2. Quality Matters: Not all links are created equal. A link from The New York Times is worth more than one from your cousin’s blog about cat sweaters (sorry, cousin).
  3. Relevance is Key: A link from a site in your industry carries more weight. If you’re selling running shoes, a link from Runner’s World is gold.
  4. Location, Location, Location: Links in the main content are usually more valuable than those hidden in footers or sidebars.

Boosting Your SEO Street Credit with Link Equity

So, how can you harness the power of link equity? Here are 4 strategies I’ve seen work wonders:

  1. Create Share-Worthy Content: Make stuff so good people can’t help but link to it. Infographics, original research, or comprehensive guides are link magnets.
  2. Guest Blogging: Share your expertise on other reputable sites in your niche. Just don’t go overboard – quality over quantity!
  3. Broken Link Building: Find broken links on other sites and offer your content as a replacement. It’s like being a helpful neighbor but for the internet.
  4. Leverage Relationships: Network with influencers and other businesses in your industry. Collaborations can lead to natural, valuable links.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

In my years of SEO consulting, link equity is one of the most overlooked SEO tactics. Don’t make these mistakes:

  1. Buying Links: Don’t. Google’s too smart for that, and you’ll end up in the penalty box.
  2. Ignoring Internal Linking: Don’t forget to spread the ‘link love within your site!
  3. Neglecting Mobile: With mobile-first indexing your site needs to be on point.

The Future of Link Equity

We can all agree that search engine optimization is a moving target. And thinking we will ever know it all about SEO is ludicrous. Since none of us can predict the future, we can follow the clues that Google has given us (that most marketers don’t follow).

Keep an eye on these 3 trends for now:

  1. User Experience: Google’s getting better at understanding how users interact with your site. A good user experience can indirectly boost your link equity.
  2. Voice Search: As voice assistants become more popular, natural language and featured snippets will play a bigger role in SEO.
  3. AI and Machine Learning: Search engines are getting smarter at evaluating link quality. Focus on earning genuine, high-quality links.

Pulp Strategy Marketing Agency: “Creating content around trending topics involves relatively low risk with potentially high rewards. By tapping into popular topics that people are currently talking about, you can get more eyes on your site and build valuable links. The key is to create high-quality, valuable content that offers a unique spin or fresh insights on these trending topics.” Source: Pulp Strategy

The Art of Earning High-Quality Links

Alright, you’re convinced that link equity is important. But how do you get those juicy, high-quality links? We listed 3 tactics that have worked wonders for my clients:

  1. The Skyscraper Technique: (although it’s been around for years)
    • Find content in your niche that’s already popular with many backlinks.
    • Create something even better – more comprehensive, up-to-date, or better designed.
    • Then reach out to the original site owner and show them your improved version.
  2. Newsjacking (But Make It Valuable) Jumping on trending topics can be great for earning links, but there’s a right and a wrong way to do it.
  3. Create Tools, Not Just Content Sometimes, the best link bait isn’t an article – it’s a tool. I’m talking calculators, generators, interactive quizzes, you name it.

One of my favorite success stories is “LearnwithHansen”. He creates simple “tools that help his audience’s productivity”. He’s built 4 websites with hundreds of thousands of monthly visitors. And he attributes his success to his resource pages.

The Secret Sauce of Outreach

Now, creating great content is only half the battle. You’ve got to get it in front of the right people. Here’s how to make your outreach stand out:

  1. Personalization is Key: I can’t stress this enough. Mass emails don’t work. Period. Before reaching out take time to research the person. Reference their work, compliment them genuinely, and show you’ve done your homework.
  2. Offer Value First: Instead of asking for a link, right off the bat, offer something of value. Maybe you noticed a broken link on their site or you have a relevant resource that could enhance one of their articles.
  3. Follow Up (But Don’t Be a Pest): People are busy. A single follow-up email can increase your response rate significantly. But know when to take a hint – if you don’t hear back after two attempts, move on.

Measuring Your Link Equity Success

All this link-building effort is great, but how do you know if it’s working?

Key Tracking Metrics:

  1. Domain Authority (DA) and Page Authority (PA) While not officially used by Google, these Moz metrics give you a good idea of how your site stacks up. Aim for steady growth over time.
  2. Referral Traffic Good links should bring you traffic. Keep an eye on your referral traffic in Google Analytics. A spike could indicate a high-quality link.
  3. Rankings for Target Keywords Ultimately, better link equity should translate to better rankings. Track your positions for key terms and look for correlations with your link-building efforts.

The Dark Side of Link Equity

Now, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the risks. As powerful as link equity is, it can also get you in trouble if misused. Avoid These Link Building No-Nos:

  1. Paid Links: Google’s gotten good at spotting these. It’s not worth the risk.
  2. Link Farms: Don’t believe the hype, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
  3. Reciprocal Link Schemes: A few natural reciprocal links are fine, but don’t go overboard.
  4. Over-Optimized Anchor Text: Mix it up to keep things natural.

Remember, Google’s all about providing value to users. Any link-building tactic that doesn’t align with this goal is to backfire sooner or later.

Jason Hennessey, Founder & CEO at Hennessey Digital: “By staying tuned into current events and trending topics in your niche, you can easily and creatively develop content that’s clickable, shareable, and linkable. Leveraging tools like Google Trends, Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit helps you stay on top of what’s trending, allowing you to create content that rides the wave of current interests and attracts high-quality links and organic traffic.” Source Search Engine Journal

Futureproofing Your Link Equity Strategy

SEO is always evolving, so how do you stay ahead, of the curve? From looking into my Google Crystal Ball Here are my future predictions:

  1. Quality Over Quantity (Even More So) Google is ‘getting better at distinguishing valuable links from fluff. Focus on earning fewer, higher-quality links rather than building mediocre ones.
  2. Topical Relevance Will Be Key: Links from sites in your niche will carry even more weight. Build relationships within your industry.
  3. User Signals Will Play a Bigger Role: Things like bounce rate and time on site from referral traffic might influence how much link equity is passed.
  4. Brand Mentions May Become the New Links: Google’s already good at associating brand mentions with websites, even without links. Earning brand mentions could become as important as earning links.

Conclusion

Phew! We’ve covered a lot of ground here. But here’s the thing – link equity isn’t just about algorithms and rankings. At its core, it’s about building relationships and providing value. Do those things consistently, and the link equity will follow.

Listen, I get it. SEO can feel like trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube blindfolded. Understanding and using link equity is like finding the cheat code. It takes time and effort, but the payoff in terms of visibility and traffic is huge.

Remember, there’s no magic bullet in SEO. It’s about consistent effort, creating value for your audience, and building genuine relationships online. Do that, and the links (and link equity) will follow.
