Small Business Marketing Quote:

“We’re living at a time when attention is the new currency: With hundreds of TV channels, billions of Web sites, podcasts, radio shows, music downloads and social networking, our attention is more fragmented than ever before. Those who insert themselves into as many channels as possible look set to capture the most value. They’ll be the richest, the most successful, the most connected, capable and influential among us. We’re all publishers now, and the more we publish, the more valuable connections we’ll make. Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Foursquare, Fitbit and the SenseCam give us a simple choice: participate or fade into a lonely obscurity”. – Pete Cashmore, CEO of Mashable

Once upon a time, 25 years ago, 💃🏽💃🏽I started my entrepreneurial endeavors in the beauty industry, as a single mom, without experience, business skills, or MONEY!!!

Needless to say, those definitely weren’t the good ole days! As you could imagine, being a single mom feeding my baby was top priority.  I was hungry in more than one sense. Like one of my favorite business and personal development mentors would say, …” You Got to be Hungry” Les Brown.

Ironically, immediately after getting started, I was off on my first business travel.  Yes, my very first hair show in New York, (perfect timing) that trip opened a whole new world!

strategic target marketingWhile in the Big City, I witnessed young girls my age, arriving in luxury cars, dripping in diamonds, and wearing fur legwarmers (I’ll never forget that!) I instantly knew this business opportunity had the potential to BRING IN BIG PROFITS!

The Importance of Small Business Training

To be expected, the hair show was lights, camera, and action. Surprisingly, the showroom was Spectacular.  Included were lively attendees, silk-rich outfits, and hair-slayed Platform Technicians.

Those who elevated me to a new level of hope and possibility!   As I begin my cosmetology career, I realized that I desperately needed serious business training. As the saying goes,” when the student is ready the teacher will appear”.

Ask and thou shall receive, training became available via (“DCU”).

The answer?…   DCU…. Dudley Cosmetology University minority own hair care and cosmetic product line. DCU’s enrollment was marketed by Dudley’s sales reps.  “Dem” Reps sold the Heck out of that dream!

As a result, I was brought into the vision Big Time. hoping to change my future trajectory!

Ready, Aim, … OOHhold on……, did I mention I had one little, itsy, bitsy, teeny, teensy, problem.

To put it plainly, I possessed Zero dollars. Adding insult to injury, I had rent, a high AS#$%%  car payment, of $381. 92, and a baby to feed? …( I will never forget that car payment amount, another long story…Bigger Lesson)!

The good news; DCU was up to date on small business marketing financial solutions. Surprisingly they offered small business loans! I could finance the business training program.

The teaching was top-notch, although only technical skills were taught. Unfortunately, the missing pieces of the training were equally as important, as I look back.  Skills such as business development, sales, and marketing.

Basically, we weren’t taught how to transfer our artistic talents into scalable, predictable, high-income-producing businesses.   Frankly, that’s what most professionals do.  We take off running to sharpen our technical skills first.

Regardless of the trade, whether you’re a hairstylist, barber, electrician, lawyer, artist, singer, or whatever. Yes, we all want to be proficient in our industry. But what we don’t want is to be the best and the Brokest. Regrettably, that’s what usually happens when you focus heavily on one area of interest.

Today is a new day, I’ve learned and continue to learn how to run a successful business. I’ve travel throughout the USA and aboard to gain knowledge.

Marketing is my kryptonite, it’s strange but I have a fascination for marketing.

My goal is to assist other SBO’s to grow a legitimate, income predictable, scalable, and measurable business.
One that doesn’t suck up all their time and or energy. And that produces life changing Profits!!!
